On June 5, Maulana Sheykh Nazim Effendi was meeting pope Benedikt at Nicosia's Franciscan church of the Holy Cross in the U.N. buffer zone, just before the pope celebrated a mass there. Here from a report in Italian TV:
An embrace between the Muslim leader of Northern Cyprus and the Pope. This is how the second day of Pope Benedict XVI concluded on the island split in two. The correspondant is Lucio Brunelli.
"The Pope in ‘no man's land’. The procession from the Nunciature to the Holy Cross Church, is inside the border part, between the Greek and the Turkish Cyprus. Barbed wire and UN soldiers stationed on rooftops, the still open wounds from the war of '74. One of the most symbolic image of this peace journey along with these other images: the old Sufi Nazim, one of the most authoritative spiritual leaders of the Turkish Muslim community, crossing the Green Line to meet in the ‘no man's land’ the head of the Catholic Church.
"I am very happy for this meeting with His Holiness," he tells us at the exit, "we joked about our age, we hugged and promised each other prayers. The Pope is one of the wisest men of the world". Words so significant especially after the assassination of Monsignor Padovese in Turkey, and the mild strategy of dialogue with Islam revived in these days of Benedict XVI. The community here as throughout all the Middle East is a small minority decimated by massive immigration. The Pope urged Christians not to abandon these lands despite the numerous difficulties, the political conflicts and the limitations on religious freedom.
